Beware the parents who....(fill in the blank)

Post  metro on Wed Jan 20, 2010 11:34 am

Here's my try at this little game:
...Must be involved in every decision the coach makes.
...Manages to stir up controversy and drama--even in the off-season.
...Is a bully when it comes to dealing with parents/kids.
...Whose kid gets extensive playing time despite being one of the worst players on the team.
...Takes being in competitive soccer WAAAAAAY too seriously.
...Evokes either laughter or grimaces when mentioned in conversation to parents from other teams.
Anyone else wanna give this one a try?????

Metro, are you describing yourself here?
Seriously, the qualities you are describing fit what is called a "helicopter parent". They hover around, swoop in and cause some trouble, and then go back to hovering again. Whenever they are not content on a game-to-game basis with their child's playing time, they swoop in again. I'll bet we all know many of these.

I don't know if I fit everyone of the examples listed?

The last one I am sure fits
...Evokes either laughter or grimaces when mentioned in conversation to parents from other teams.

Great List Metro. Looking for negatives/controversy is the biggest kick in the crotch. "The Ticket" did a great segment today on "helecopter partents" as mentioned by Ilik2wach. I think the feelign of entitlement by parents to paid coaches is becoming more and more prevelent.

Digital Video Cameras work better you have it documented, can get exact times, embarrassing coaching moments can be posted later during your smear campaign.

Very Happy

I see this a lot... but the only one I understand are keepers' parents. They must go through a lot of stress watching their kid play that position. Usually they are very quiet and will make comments to their dd when the ball is far away.

I have seen a parent who's dd played forward and he always moved to the end she was on and yelled for everyone to pass her the ball and then would scream her name at least 5 times every time she received it! Very annoying.

Especially for the poor forward!

I go to every game with the intention of staying on our half of the field, but some mythical force draws me toward my daughter in goal! I hate it too...never thought I'd be "that parent", but I've gone to therapy and am ok with it now.
Glad to hear someone understands....Usually after games the other keepers parents will find me or me them, and we'll commiserate together for a minute.

For the keepers parents, might try going to the opposite end of the field--makes the dd less nervous. They still know the support is there, but don't have to hear it after every thing they do what they could have done differently.
