hey commissioner...where did you get your info on meja kickin the ball out really far? thats weird...never heard that one...but have definately seen the tactic before and its annoying..maybe we will use it against farley...im callin up my coach and seein what he says...lol...

This one is always a little funny to me.... One team clears the ball far out of play so that they only lose 3-0 instead of 10-0 and the other team's parents have a fit and they yell; "PLAY SOCCER!!"

Well my advice to those parents is this: Since there no rule saying you can only have ONE game ball, have the ref approve 3 or 4 game balls and have some dads be Ball Boys to keep the game moving OR just complain and make excuses here in txsoccer.....

Meja didn't ever launch the ball or kick it way out against us. There were many times where they took on our forwards and made the decision to tap it out because they didn't have any cover on a breakaway but to say they launched it or kicked it really far (implying that they were trying to slow the game down considerably) is not accurate...at least in our game. Meja was very impressive this tournament and deserve a lot of credit for making it through a really tough group to get to the quarters and for a great game vs FCD Grubb where they lost 2-1. Teams should be aware that when they take on Meja in LHGCL this season that they are going to have a tough game on their hands. Hats off to Rick Parker and his players. They are a class act and will probably only get better from here on out.

i'll say this on the topic of 'kicking it out'...

i haven't seen a team yet that didn't send the ball out when their player was faced with taking on one or more opposing players deep in their own territory and had no other play but to TAP the ball out. i've also seen teams whose players have sent the ball 30 yards towards the parking lot repeatedly in what seems like a deliberate attempt to avoid having to further defend a tough opponent in the remaining minutes of a game and waste some time. there's a big difference.

i personally would not make predictions about a game when i hadn't seen both teams play first hand. on that note the commissioner implies that someone else said, 'that Meja team can really KICK IT OUT OF BOUNDS FAR.' that would suggest the commissioner has not seen Meja play but considers that the sole reason they might be able to hold Farley's Texans to 4 goals. not saying anything about Farley's team, i've heard they have tremendous talent and are second to none. i have seen Meja play and never saw that weak tactic employed.

i have respect though for all the D1 teams, because they had to show up to play more than once to get there. i wouldn't take anyone for granted and anything can happen on any given day. cool thing about U11 is that it's about learning and improving.

commissioner (and other potential second hand doubters) i would suggest you come watch Meja and other lesser known teams play a game or two. small club, new name - it ain't so bad. it's like trying sushi for the first time and thinking you're not going to like it. then, you relax for just a minute and realize it might be alright. next thing you know, you find yourself wanting more and open your mind to the possibility that it might be good. finally, you come to the unforeseen conclusion that it's darn right delicious.

soccer is a beautiful sport, even for the 10 year olds not wearing the brand name.

as a side note, soccer sounder makes a good point - toss another ball to the ref and it's a non-issue. sorry gstreet.

A little more on this:

Clearing the ball FAR off the pitch to allow your defense more time to set is called good soccer strategy! Everyone from Brazil to England to Frisco High School to Solar White correctly does the same... It may annoy you as a parent to see it done several times a game, but it is part of the game.... At the end of the day, the other team has to get thier foot on the ball to send it out.. What, do you want the other team to make it easier for your team to score?

On the other hand, if a team is playing for a TIE or has a small LEAD, and they repeatedly clear the ball FAR off the pitch in an obvious attempt to waste time, the REF can caution (Yellow Card) the team as wasting time violates a law of the game. It would be the same as a GK holding the ball for more than 6 seconds....

fair enough. what i really wanted to clear up is that i haven't seen too many teams send the ball far off the pitch excessively, in an attempt to avoid actually playing the opponent; this would include Meja. i also think it's wiser to actually have seen a team play before commenting too much on their ability and / or possible game strategy.

soccer sounder, you seem to be a steady voice of reason and relative objectivity. that's appreciated.
