Positions and Starting Numbers Empty Positions and Starting Numbers

Post by flygirl 16/01/13, 01:05 pm

I remember when I went select - many, many years ago pale starting numbers were assigned to the starting position holders - traditionally 1-11 (I know some other numbers are popular with starters now). This is how most college and pro teams operate as well.

Is this common place with select teams in NTX - numbers associated with positions? or does it not matter?

At least for the clubs/teams my DD has been on its "pick a number" at uniform time, sometimes with a ceiling based on the number of players on the team. (For example the DDs club when she was U-11 would not allow a number over 20, since max roster was 16.)

Don't think it really matters. Keepers usually have 0, 00, and 1. Other than that, my dd's teams have all picked numbers based on seniority, with no number higher than 25.

There's a lot of things about soccer that I find stupid and don't understand, yet there I am forking out $3k for my DD to play select every year...

Of course, those are the same words my relatives use to describe me when I tell them I'm paying $3k per year for my 11 yr. old to play soccer...

Guess what goes around, comes around... affraid

Same stupidity in pointy ball. Tradition and all that, since once upon a time they designated positions.

Positions and Starting Numbers Empty Re: Positions and Starting Numbers

In rugby the number on our back corresponded to the position played. My dd's in soccer always wore "favorite" numbers irrespective of position. Typically first come, first served. I've never quite understood 'no numbers over 25' either. We had a kid at U11 who requested #85, no problem.

I know years ago in basketball you couldn't have digits over 5, simply because the refs wouldn't be able to hand-signal fouls to the scoring table.
Apparently that has changed.

Players on my boys team picked the number they wanted based on seniority. A lot picked the number their dad had in HS. We have a #71 on our team - he bought the uniform used and we already had a #7 so he added a 1 to the end. Our goalie is actually 11, it was his dad's # and he didn't want to be 0. My dd is #8 because her older brother is 8 and all my spiritwear has 8 on it.
