On being physical or what not, I think it is all about reputation, and some times the teams or coaches (and parents) don't do much to help the situation. Reputation is built one brick at a time (or may be one yellow card at a time).
I still think almost all kids at this age won't do anything their coaches would not want them do to. If they do it time and time, it is because their coaches let them think it is ok to do it, and get rewarded by playing more and more. Parents can try and curtail it, but coaches can not escape the stigma or the reputation built on it.
