They should be out advertising fees etc...that should be their risk and not ours. I say we do a million man march....
I just wanted to chime in here and shed some light on the "up-front" expenses for a tournament.. These are items you cannot typically recover whether the tournament goes off or not..
- T-shirts: gotta have em printed and ready to go before the tourney and that doesn't happen overnight.. several thousands of dollars
- Got Soccer scheduling costs - $10 per team in tourney.. $2,200 in this case
-Trophies - gotta buy them before tourney. Argument can be made that you can hold on to them and just buy new name plates for the next tourney... but they may not want to.
- Golf cart / Tent rentals - may be able to get some back, but gotta have em ready for tourney
- Referee assignor - The assignors spend LOTS of time pre tournament scheduling and getting the crews all worked out before the big day. Must be paid for their time.
-Referees- Did any games go off? if so referees were paid and field rental costs may have been as well.
anyway. I gree that the 50% refund is baloney, and i'm not sure where that standard came from... but it is there in all the tournaments rules. The Legacy Cup will attempt to give back more than that ( at least thats what they imply). A club or association stands to make way more money from a tournament that actually plays, rather than one that doesn't, so trust me they don't want to cancel any more than you want to not play...
yes it stinks, but there are way more up front costs than advertising...
In looking at the above, I'd guess it takes about 10-18 (depending on fee) teams to pay for most of that (shirts and trophies might bump that up considerably).
I'd totally agree with the no trophies - my attic is full of them and to my recollection, our teams never entered a tournament to win one (that was often the goal, but wasn't the incentive - with the lone exception of myself tanking a tennis tournament because second place received a really cool bag rather than a tiny first place trophy). Get someone else to sell the shirts (ask for a percentage of the profits) - in Houston, a third-party sold shirts with team pictures on them, they were really nice and the did well.
Here's what we did when my son was U9-U10 - it was brilliant. The top team (probably in the nation) for '98s invited all the top '97s to a scrimmage league. This was held every Saturday at the outdoor field at Soccer Spectrum. Since all the top teams were invited, most (exception of one) joined. There was one official, 'soft offsides' - it was called - but you were allowed to finish the play, no score kept (okay, that didn't work too well), pks after the games (regardless of score). It was unbelievable competion and very fun. Given it was Saturday (big football day) - many teams had subs and many kids played multiple games. Great way for teams to meet each other and kids to experience different coaches/teams. The only thing the coordinator (current Solar director) had to do was find a facility, hire a referee, solicit teams, get them to sign a waiver, setup a schedule. It was around $800, but was so selective that it was well worth it. There would be a lot of coaches NOT interested in this, IMO, as there are Sat and Sun alternatives now and the prospect of losing players from exposure to other teams scares 'em off. There was a big 'hubub' around teams winning against teams playing short (and scores posted on Turfmonster), nothing new there!
I often wonder if you had access to a field or fields, and just had it open every Sunday at 1:00-4:00, if you could get teams to show up to scrimmage (if it were a consistent 4-6 teams, it could go on for awhile). If it were uneven, you could have practice and then play the winner. This forum could determine matchups or coaches could call each other to set them up. Everyone's schedule would be consistent and the competition could be somewhat controlled.
