Other than Solar Red, are there any 03 teams that play possession football? Do any of the teams actively pursue the technically-minded players that want to knock it around?

Nope. They are the only one. Everyone else are taught simply to kick as long as possible either North and South. - errr - or East and West if you are playing on fields 6-10. Jeez...

It really is an honest question. I'm no SRSA fan boy - I just wonder what teams are ultimately the best fit if you are a player who keeps it on the ground.

I think all teams would like to play possession and will practice it during practices. However, when most teams get in games, all of that practice goes out the window and it's kickball.

Remember, in order to play possession, all it takes is ONE person to have a poor touch and all of that work holding the ball and building up the play is gone. Plus, it is MUCH more simple and efficient to simply not worry about possession and bypass the midfield altogether. This way, a team only has to rely on a few players (fast forward/sweeper/outside mids).

It is a shame that the pitches are as big as they are and that the kids are having to play 11v11 at this age, but that is for a different topic.

The reality is, is that there are quite a few girls, when combined, could probably easily compete with SRSA. Unfortunately, they are dispersed among other teams. Until that day, I think SRSA is safe at the top.

If you are looking for a team that tries to play possession, going out to their practices will probably not be enough. Guest play and during the last couple of games, try to check out the teams you are interested in. See what the team ACTUALLY plays like, rather than just how they practice. What you might be looking for, are teams that both practice AND play possession, even if it is to their possible detriment: meaning forgoing longball opportunities, in order to try to keep to their philosophy.

Wow, one of the most rational and unbias answers I've read on this forum in a long while.

I agree - our coach tries (and is quite good). I think the parents need coaching. I don't think most of the families watch much high level soccer. I grew up watching (and playing) baseball - we knew how to turn a double play before we ever practiced it.

It is frustrating in that it retards the development of the kids who are wired to play that way.

I/we aren't looking (we have a good situation) - I'm more just curious as to the overall coaching climate.

You hit the nail on the head. The percentages are changing, but the uneducated parents far outnumber those that know.

It begins as early at U-6. SRSA is the prime example. Many of those girls were brought through academy together learning possession style at a young age and everyone who joined in later had to learn and play the system. There was, and still is, no questioning the system.

I agree with the parents comments above. If you want a possession style team, find a group parents who played club, college soccer or even have older kids who have been through the process and understand the game. The parents who don't get it are the problem.

I know of a U-6 boys team that is being built on this concept that connects more passes than most U-11 teams I have seen. And they have the crappiest coach ever who doesn't have a clue what he is doing  Very Happy

I agree. Some of teams I see in PPL obviously are practicing possession soccer because you will see the girls play nice soccer for a few minutes at a time. But when they get pinned back for a short spell or give a ball away too easily they boot the ball. After one girl does it, the booting of the ball seems contagious.

I know soccer is different from our traditional sports where coaches can call time outs, set up plays and/or just come the players down. That's why it does take an entire team "culture" to make it work. Girls have to feel secure playing that style. That comes from coaches emphasizing the type of soccer being played over the results. It also comes from parents accepting the growing pains that come when you focus on development rather than winning.

So, yes, other teams are being taught possession soccer, but Solar Red is the one '03 team that uses it consistently and wins consistently.

The kickball is definitely contagious. My 02's team struggles with that exact problem. My 00's team does not struggle with it very often.

Well said C&R,  at this young age it is very risky to play posession ball as that one mistake can easily lead to an unfortunate goal.  As such, unless you have great confidence or dont worry about losing , it is far easier and less risky to play kickball.

The pressure of not making a mistake that leads to giving up a goal and a loss that affects teams ranking, position etc is just too great.
The only way to change would be to make wins/losses meaningless (which of course is delirious in the system we have).

SRSA have been able to transcend this problem as they play on a different level and know that they can overcome any deficit.    Kudos to them.

And there lies the conundrum. A possession based team with an explosive finishing ability and rock solid defense. Every premier league coaches dream too.

"Rock solid defense" is right. If your coach trains your defensive line and keeper with "on the job training only" ... then it may be time for a switch. I know I've been frustrated by that in the past. The rest of the team will feel more comfortable practicing possession based soccer, if they can make mistakes that aren't always going to amount to be critical errors in the game. Ain't no body got time for that. Or at least it feels like that at that moment. They need to trust a rescue from their teammates behind them. That's my two cents.
