LHGCL Playoff Schedules Posted

Post by Relegated on Thu Mar 31, 2016 5:16 pm

Lake Highlands has posted a playoff schedule that begins on Sunday April 24th.  That is the day after the season ends.  Interesting to see what happens if any of the rainouts can not be played before then.

What the heck's the point until they figure out how many teams are taking their byes into which age groups?  Heck, they could theoretically end up with like 20+ teams wanting a bye into division 1 of say the 2002 age group (e.g., all the top U12 teams take their bye as U14s and all the top U13 teams take their byes as U14s).  Looks like we're in for some wacky unbalanced age groups potentially.

Ummm... because some of the decisions on byes will likely hinge upon whether a team gets a D1 or D2 bye...

Baffling though - how does Lake Highlands have any idea how many teams will request a bye for D1 2003 (as an example)? There are twice as many teams who *could* apply for those byes as they would ideally like to slot in. So what are they going to do - back door political deals to whittle the >10 down to 10? Or take the 12 or 13 that do apply and create unbalanced divisions?

Explain what? Byes have to be earned before they can be claimed. It's not that baffling.

No doubt. My point is that you can have an 03 team take their bye as either U15 or U14 and you can have an 04 team also take as a U13 or U14. Hence, you have the possibility of >10 teams opting to take their bye in U14 (2003 birth year). What am I missing?

So you really think that will happen? Even so, the playoffs are part of the season and still have to be played. What am I missing?

I see what you're saying soccergypsy....

What if 6 of the D1 qualified 04 teams take their bye up and 6 of the D1 qualified 03 teams remain 03...then you have 12 teams in 03 AP LHGCL next year.

Or what if all 04 teams that qualified for a D1 bye moved up and all qualifying 03 teams kept their byes as is....20 teams again?

ok. i'll play.....that'll never happen, but let's just say it does.....then it's U11 all over again. Everybody plays everybody. Top 10 keep their spot.

The answer is that there will almost certainly be "unbalanced" divisions again next year. When LH made the decision to give teams the choice between age divisions for their byes, they knew this would this would happen.

Personally, I think it's going to cause them a ton of headaches, and I would've just done it the way Boys Classic league is, by awarding the byes upward as usual. But that's why I'm on this board and not the LH board...

The divisions won't get back to their "normal" number of teams until the 2017 season which is a minor concern compared to all the movement that's about to take place when this season ends, IMO. As far as the playoffs go, those games will be played if for no other reason than this little tidbit that was included in their plans for the current season:

"Teams in U12 – U17 that did not play the same number of total games (including playoffs) as they would have in a “normal” LHGCL playing year and are in good standing with the league will receive a rebate for games not played. Rebate amounts to be determined by the Executive Board at the end of the 2015/2016 playing year."

The U-13's are getting 14 games this season compared to 18 games in a normal year. These playoff games will get several of those teams close to the total amount of games they would have played in a "normal" season and thus reduce these alleged "rebates" LH will have to pay out.

You can find that information on the left side of the Lake Highlands Webpage. It's says "2015/2016 Playing Format Addendum Released". Because my account is under 7 days old I can't actually post the link here for you... but you should find the answer to your question there regarding the playoff tournament.

Can I get a confirmation?.....I'm 99% sure I'm reading the addendum correctly.  Just need to check.  After all things are said and done, next year we'll have 9 teams in D1 and 10 teams in D2 and D3, respectively.  4 teams are relegated each year from D3 and need to requalify, but this year it'll be 5 because we need to drop an extra one from Lake Highlands since there will only be 29 teams in LH instead of the 30 we're used to.

Do I have that right?  Thanks, in advance, to anyone who can confirm.

That would be correct in most years. With the change to CY and teams picking which direction they move their bye 'up or down', I think there will be some unbalanced Divisions. Once everyone turns in their bye designation, they will release the list of teams for each Division in June. Should be interesting.
