Officiating

Post by nolanryan on 26/10/17, 12:44 am

Well, there is not as much to post about as these girls get older and become more solid players. The more things change the more they stay the same though. NTX is still in dire need of referees who will actually: 1) pay attention, 2) understand the rules, 3) call what they see. Recently I have seen so many bizarre calls that left me scratching my head such as:

1) a backpass by defender to the goalie who picked up the ball and punted it far...no call...
2) a 6ft tall girl getting clipped in the back and decked only to be called for "flopping". I forgot, todays referees now are gifted mind readers.
3) An offensive player dribbling into the box and getting trucked completely by the defender...no call...advantage played when the ball spun away to a team mate.
4) A high kick called on a player who connected with the ball as another player was coming at her (the perpetrator was a goalie).

The stupidity just seems to continue. We need to encourage our young players to get their referee license. It pays well.

Player asked for 10 yards on free kick - referee marked off the distance as 10 steps heel to toe.

Foul recognition and consistency are lacking for refs in LH. Doesn't help that a many are 70 plus years of age. We are actually watching them slowly die each weekend. But... it is what it is. A watered down, poorly managed, and poorly ref'd league. It will get worse before it gets better

I don't believe that. Made me laugh though. That said, you do see many of them count ten paces, but they aren't 8 feet tall and their normal paces are not 1 yard each, so they typically mark off about 7-8 yards and call it 10.

It is almost frustrating enough to bring me out of retirement, but what would 1 perfectly called game and 2 perfectly worked lines per weekend really do to the overall league? Maybe some referees would see that you can leave the center circle while calling a game?

A little defense of referees:

Giving a call for simulation always involves a bit of mind reading -- this referee obviously disagreed regarding the existence of an underlying foul -- or maybe they didn't realize she was 6 feet tall (what does her height have to do with anything?????). If they didn't think there was a foul, the question then is whether or not the player going down was trying to fool the referee. That is subjective, based on mind reading -- or if there was no contact at all, it becomes easy.

A high kick/dangerous play does not depend on whether or not the player connected with the ball. They can connect and still be dangerous if the foot was up to high. Bicycle kicks often get called for this, even if they make perfect contact.

Honest to God.  Too unbelievable to actually make up.

Okay. I believe it. I wish I would have seen it.
