Open practices vs tryouts vs offers
Can someone help explain how the north Texas soccer tryouts/open practice work?
I’ve read numerous posts that open tryouts are now ongoing (after state cup).
Then I’m also reading some teams are having official tryouts late June
(Not listed as an open practice).
Then I’ve been told teams are formed by July 1? But have also seen tryouts listed early July as well.
If you open practice now and perform well, do you get an offer in May?
Or do you go again to a tryout later in June before getting an offer?
Thanks, moved here from another state and the process is different.

Re: Open practices vs tryouts vs offers
Open Tryouts are during the month of June. Any team that wants you can offer you a spot, but cannot sign you until July 1.
Official tryouts makes it seem important, but it is really nothing different. It is just when teams make final decisions to sign players on July 1.
Hope this helps.

Got it. Thanks for clarification.
My assumption then would be to use open practice to try several teams (in June) to see best fit.

That’s exactly what the purpose is! What age are you looking for?

Re: Open practices vs tryouts vs offers
Open Practices are basically tryouts in North Texas. You need to get your kid to open practices now! Select teams sign new contracts on July 1. Players are contractually with their team until June 30. However, they can go to open practices without a release after the State Cup concludes. By July 1, most teams have determined who they want to sign based on their open practices. After July 1, they host "tryouts" but there are almost no spots available on the top teams by then. They might have spots open up as people change their mind and switch teams, but teams are more likely to choose from the pool of players that attended open practices. Classic teams have to turn in their rosters by July 14. Players can be added later but teams write their roster in ink on July 1. Welcome to North Texas soccer!!!

Re: Open practices vs tryouts vs offers
So now advice needed from anyone who has gone through the May/June changing of teams.
We are trying to balance our weeks this June (mostly Tu/Thurs since that when 95% teams open practice).
Coaches always want you to come back, which then eliminates the opportunity to "try" another team.
Any good way to manage the balancing act?
We've gotten a couple of "tentative" offers so far but another coach was put off when we confirmed w/ him then cancelled because my son wanted to "go back" to another different team's practice.
These coaches have to know it's good for the kids to try different team practices.
Any advice is welcome, suprisingly difficult to manage the invites/time/and gauge the seriousness of IF you will get an actual firm offer.

Re: Open practices vs tryouts vs offers
Yeah, this whole dating thing gets tough, right?! I made a spreadsheet to keep up w teams, practice times, etc. trying best to not get too many teams in the mix; be open with coaches that we are looking at other options (as they are too), and if we make a commitment to show up to a practice, we keep it (and politely tell the other coach who wants him that we already had made a commitment to another team; maybe next week?). And at the same token, if there is a team that is not a likely fit, be honest and tell the coach that you need to persue other options that are a better fit. My two cents. Hope it helps.
