I have never thought of Select Soccer as an "either/or" proposition when it comes to academics and playing. If anything, one motivates the other. If DD doesn't have excellent grades, she doesn't play. I think the combination of academics and the life lessons taught through soccer (relationship building, team building, competitive IQ, emotional IQ, mental and physical hard work) will get them "Farther in life".
If you have been "appointed", I assume you have a list of other players, use it to create the foundation for a team that is independent and minimal fees. At this age the girls can almost coach themselves (witness most JV and Freshmen High school sidelines). You could end up putting something exciting, and memorable together.
What was the name of that one team: the Purple Princess Warriors?.....
