Where did these rankings come from?

Also I don't like seeing 4A with 5A. Not saying some 4A's like Guyer can't win, just saying no common opponents to compare?

From an earlier post by the author: Rankings are simply the team's current record including tournaments adjusted for # OF ECNL PLAYERS, coaches, competition, grade classification of players (we don't want a lot of seniors), prior year record, etc.

Which means its entirely subjective.

Byron Nelson played some 5A teams in the showcase tourney Nolan hosts (cant recall the name of tourney now since the name was changed since I played). Correct me if I am wrong on this one, can't recall who they played but know they were in the tourney. Not sure about Guyer though....

Just to compare to the Elite Soccer Report final state rankings. These rankings are not limited to North Texas schools but you can see where the NT teams fall anyway...

Texas: 1. 1. Plano West (28-0-2*), 2. Southlake Carroll (30-3-0*), 3. Westlake (28-1-0*), 4. Denton Guyer (28-1-0*), 5. Highland Park (25-1-5*), 6. Marcus (23-4-1*), 7. Katy Taylor (23-4-2*), 8. Hebron (18-4-3*), 9. Cinco Ranch (24-3-1*), 10. Byron Nelson (26-3-1*), 11. Mansfield (21-4-0*), 12. Coppell (17-3-6*), 13. Grapevine (18-5-4*), 14. Cedar Ridge (21-1-2*), 15. San Antonio Johnson (21-5-3*), 16. Kingwood (22-5-0*), 17. Sachse (16-6-2*), 18. McKinney Boyd (15-4-5*), 19. Ursuline Academy (18-4-4*), 20. Wakeland (23-3-2*).

There is no question that both Denton Guyer and Highland Park can beat any of the 5A teams on this list including Plano West, Southlake Carroll and Flower Mound Marcus. As you could see from the state final both Denton Guyer and Highland Park can create some remarkable things on the field.

2013 FINAL NORTH TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL RANKINGS Empty Re: 2013 FINAL NORTH TEXAS HIGH SCHOOL RANKINGS

Post by u95g dad 25/04/13, 04:44 pm

Last year's scores for SLC vs Guyer were 5-0 and 5-1 with SLC on top each time. I don't remember the exact score from the scrimmage between the two this year but I am thinking it was at least 3-0 SLC. I don't know if they got some new players that would have made them that much better but that is a pretty big jump in one year. It is hard to see a 5th place team in an average district would move up to the #2 team in the entire state. I would still rank them pretty high because they had a heck of a year. I think with Highland Park's tie with Plano West that gives some thought that the top 4A teams might be as good as the top 5A teams. Guyer's lack of success in 5A last year seems to discount that thought.

I am not trying to take anything away from what Guyer and the other 4A schools accomplished, but it does appear there is a bigger difference in the competition level than these rankings would lead you to believe.

Post by Pitchmon 25/04/13, 11:09 pm

4A has byes in first round of playoffs, ok not a huge deal but we have lost some springing games and I know SLC lost a surprising one as well. Sure stars were gone, but replace that with injuries, grades and you never know. Also 4A playoffs do not require early travel at a time when for underclass men grades have to be made. So again just saying its hard to compare 4 V 5. Nolan espn showcase shows some moxie, but Byron did not play top 5A teams, but they are good. Again just saying 5A should be ranked with 5A and 4A with their own as well?

Comparing 4A to 5A is like comparing a 5A school with a total campus size of 2300 to a Junior/Senior Campus of 4000.
These schools that you have all mentioned as the 5A best (and they are) should really be in a 6A if they have such large campuses.
Graduating classes of 500 compare to 1000-2000 is quite a dissadvantage to overcome, but one I am glad to be part of. It allows 3 or 4 x's as many student athletes to participate.

Ursuline is rated a tad too high. SPC schools are, at the moment, stronger than TAPPS schools. Both Greenhill and ESD thumped the 3 TAPPS schools they played (Parish, Prince of Peace and J.P. II) and Hockaday didn't lose to any of them either (tied 1-1 with Parish...a team that lost to both ESD and Greenhill). ESD beat John Paul ll 3-0 at J.P. while Ursuline barely squeaked by J.P 1-0.
