Should we switch teams? Empty Should we switch teams?

Post by Erik Plovpenning 09/02/15, 05:25 pm

My daughter's team does not seem to be progressing. She is a strong player and could compete at a higher level, but her team cannot. How do I know when to make a change? what age is too late?

Just my two cents but you should always prioritize your daughters development over the team. If your daughter is significantly better than her teammates then she will not be challenged in practice and will not be forced to improve. The other extreme is of course if she goes to a team that is significantly better than her it can be a really bad experience as she struggles to catch up.

I would recommend looking to make a move now the longer you wait the further behind she will be...

Ask her what she wants. Don't force a kid into a situation where she has to work hard and fight for minutes when she only wants to play with her friends

Absolutely correct!  Too many parents try to force the kid to "develop" (code word for 'do what I want'), and the kids end up hating soccer for it.

Not all kids are shooting for a college soccer career, they just want to have fun.

I agree with go mostly, but I don't think you can necessarily just leave it up to your kid. IMHO the answer to your question can be different depending on several factors (kids talent, maturity, goals...coaches talent/influence which you did not speak to). I would recommend discussing your concerns with the coach, get a second opinion from another trusted soccer coach if you have one ....if you don't I would build one with a separate skills/private lesson coach.

You're the parent, it's your decision. Make a move now while you still can (academy). You don't want to write that big check and be stuck for a year.

Agreed, be the parent, make the decision based on her input, but really think about and discuss with others where your daughter is developmentally and skills-wise.  Then make a move.

This came up on a different forum topic.  Go to a team that will challenge her but will also give her plenty of playing time.  Going to a really good team where she sits on the bench is no better than where you are now.

If you're near frisco, you might want to check out fcd. Great facility, lots of teams, ecnl and they score high on 05 best team polls.

Is this a serious comment? Based on accounts of friends that play/have played there, and recent implosion of several teams, I understand FCD to be a complete mess. Good facilities and lots of teams for sure...

soccerchicken wants so desperately to been seen as clever, and, to be honest, that last bit was pretty good.

If dispensing sound soccer advice is trying to be clever...then guilty as charged.

Suggesting a club where the 05 "Premier" team seems to get a new coach every season is definitely sound advice. If I remember correctly, didn't another FCD coach abandon her top 05 team a season right before select?

If they got a new coach "only" every season, that would be a huge improvement.

but they do have good facilities (when you are allowed to use them)

and plenty of payingplaying options

Getting your child exposure to different coaching styles is beneficial and part of the curriculum.

Part of the curriculum is exposure to different coaching styles. Another part is saying your coach and team are no longer here so figure it out and let us know what you want to do.

Had you discussed this with the head of the program, I'm sure your situation would have been handled quickly and fairly. Do you really think this is the correct place to air dirty laundry though?

Oh, my DD does not play for FCD. Was merely responding to your comment about the club based on friends I have/had there. But honestly thought you were joking. The whole thread kind of seemed to be in jest.

I met with the head of the program.

While I was there, I saw a body floating by his office.  Not sure if it was a coach, or a parent who complained.

They did have some beautiful fields out there - just couldn't figure out why only 2 of them were being used.

I would swear they had at least 10 teams on each of the 2 fields.

Fair enough. This board is for factual and intelligent soccer information. Not innuendo and false accusations. Your board privileges may continue. Just don't do it again.
