DEFENDING TO DELAY

Defending to delay is the first defensive concept players must learn and understand. When teaching defending the first reaction is to win the ball. However, as a defender your first job is to delay the attack. Why? Delaying the attack gives time for your teammates to get behind the ball and help cover.

Sliding will also be a key skill taught in the class. Sliding is also used to delay the attacker by blocking a shot or pass. Slide tackling is not taught, rather sliding to block or sliding to delay.
