When are ODP Tryouts?

Post by SWGSB 52 on 05/07/13, 01:24 pm

Trying to put together our '02G team calendar and was wondering what weekends to block off. Last year tryouts were held on the last weekend of Sept & first two weekends of Oct.

Is there any reason to think this will change?

Don't see the 02 info yet, but 01 - 97 tryouts are August 4th and 11th.

Dates and times may vary depending on league games 02.
Practices have always been on Sundays.
They will send out a temporary tryout date during the season.

Hey, we paid $125 last season for 10 2HR sessions - no brainier.. My DD loved it! For me, just enjoy the extra touches and do not get caught up in all the opinionated BS. She will have a great time around positive coaches and decent competition.

One thing it did for my DD is that she determined on her own how much better certain players were than her and it has motivated her to work harder on her own......

BTW most practices are on Sundays....no conflict with club.

its actually $125 in the fall for 5 sessions and then $125 in spring for another 5 sessions. The sessions are closer to 3 hours. I agree with Hook It, No brainer. Excellent coaching and focus on the details. I very much liked watching the level of competition train together.

Does the player need to be present to all 3 try out sessions? Only asking because from my understanding the weekend of the 1st try out's is also PPL qualifying. While this doesn't pertain to our family just know it's being asked by others on teams that are having to re-qualify and don't know how where their team will land.

No, my DD fell ill before the second tryout. We e-mailed Shawn Morgan to let her know. We made the third session and was selected into the pool.

So 2003's (U-11) are eligible this year? I thought it was always U-12?

I registered my '04 who was born late 2003. She'll definitely be out of her league but hopefully will gain some valuable experience trying out with older more experienced girls.

I do wish that the ODP calender year was the same as the soccer year. My DD will always be playing up no matter which year she intends on trying out.

At ODP try-outs (at least for the past few years), they break the girls into 2 big groups: Jan to June bdays and July to Dec bdays. This levels the playing ground some for the younger/smaller/ girls.

Good to know. Is this how they select girls to the training program, selecting so many girls from the first half of the year and so many girls from the bottom half, or is it based only on absolute talent/skills for the whole age group? If so, it still puts the girls that have been playing in my DD's instance '04 competition all year at a disadvantage against girls playing '03 competition (or insert any other year for comparison). Probably evens out a bit as they get older I reckon.

ODP selection is a great mystery. The players selected are all talented players, but by they do pass over some "D1 star players" as well. You will see big players and small players selected. The vast bulk of players selected are from LHGC league, but there are a few PPL and Arlington league players. I've heard of a few rec players making the cut, but have yet to actually meet such a player. I don't believe there is a 'quota', but who knows.

After observing ODP for a few years, a few common ODP player qualities I have noticed:

1) everyone is fit.

2) everyone has a very good first touch on the ball.

3) everyone has a strong understanding of the flow of the game (what alot of coaches call 'soccer IQ'.)

4) everyone is a quick learner and they adapt to new field formations and positioning quickly.

I know a player on one of the older boys ODP teams that has never played select. Been on the same rec team forever. An excellent player too. So that is confirmation rec players can and do make it.

I too agree and would say #4 is more on the soccer IQ...

Also, they look for attributes such as: coachable, hard working, competitive meaning they do not give up easily....

The first year is all about the girls getting used to their new program, playing some locals and then off to one camp, and a few get invited to play up in a second camp. Over all my DD has just loved it!

It is not perfect, some organization issues, but the sideline are a dream with no yelling, I mean NON AT ALL! Actually it was kinda creepy in the beginning and of course I made a few extra trips to Starbucks to calm my anxiety.

Actually, I think the "coachable" and being able to play as a team player are two primary attributes. They want strong, fit, talented players for sure, but if they are not coachable or do not want to blend in and work as a team, then the players won't make it. Oops, and of course they want them to be able to juggle that ball across the field! (edited to add last comment)

Alot of agreement there.

My kid loved/still loves ODP.  Our group has had ZERO team mate drama.  Coaches are great.  Loads of good friendships made with other kids who share the same love and commitment to the game.

Sidelines are a joy.  No parent coaching.   No screaming, yelling, griping.  You get to hear loads of first-hand "gossip" regarding the various teams and coaches in the league.  More accurate info than you get here.

My favorite:  I have never heard an ODP parent scream "SEND IT!!!!" (or any other idiotic rec soccer chants.)

I think I have solved the mystery of how players are selected for ODP. Perhaps it's not a PLAYER tryout after all, but a PARENT tryout. Smile

I am a little confused. I had thought that this year the 03s would only be ones with birth dates in 02. Didnt see anything about a date cutoff of 12/31/02. Just want to make sure I got this right before registering.

I thought the same thing. But it specifically says they are accepting players with an 03 birth year. http://www.ntxsoccer.org/story/2013/07/09/odp-announces-open-tryouts-for-2013-14-year/

So what do they look for when it comes to skills? I assume that they want some juggling expertise. Just trying to see what my daughter should be working on. I assume it mostly comes down to your DD either has it or she doesnt but figure there has to be things she can work on for the next month to help her out a little.
