ALL age groups will be going age pure August 2016

http://www.ussoccer.com/stories/2015/08/24/18/07/150824-coaching-player-development-initiatives-rel

BIRTH-YEAR REGISTRATION
Birth-year registration calendars will now align with the start of the calendar year and run from January to December, rather than August to July as it had previously. For example, a U-15 player (players 15 years old or younger) would have a birth year of 2000 (Jan. 1 through Dec. 31) for the 2015 registration year. In 2016, U-15 players would be born in 2001 or earlier. Birth-year registration applies to all player age groups and not just players age 12 and younger.

So your choices are break a team apart or play up..........

How will LHGCL handle this?

If your team earns a bye can you take it with you if you play up?

What if you earn a bye and your team becomes 2 teams. If each team keeps half the players do you get a bye for each age group?

I'm going to stick with the only prediction that I know will come true...

No matter how LHGCL decides to handle it, someone will be pi$$ed off about it, and think that they could've come up with a better solution...

i think they were just using 2016 as an example unless ntx decides to start earlier..........................and i doubt they will.  in the same article link you posted, is says towards the beginning................................................

U.S. Soccer will standardize small-sided game participation and field size based on player age groups, while also aligning birth-year registration calendars with the start of the calendar year and run from January to December.

The coaching initiatives, which will be mandated by August of 2017, are focused on advancing youth players’ individual skill and intelligence, and providing players with the best opportunity to improve.

The email from the NTX Youth commissioner has been floating around this site for a few weeks now... NTX is proceeding with implementation fall of 2016.

My DD left this age group when we moved to Seattle this year but I still like to check this forum occasionally to see what the 01s are up to. Here is what the Washington equivalent of LHGCL put out last week. Who knows if there will be a standard implementation but this is one state's approach.

Regional Club League position on USSF mandate of calendar-year age classifications
August 18, 2015 12:51 PM

RCL_Cropped

In response to a U.S. Soccer Federation mandate beginning in August 2017, Washington Youth Soccer and the Regional Club Subcommittee have committed to transition from a school-year (Aug. 1 – July 31) registration model to a calendar-year (Jan. 1 – Dec. 31) registration model, effective for the 2016-2017 Regional Club League (RCL) season.
This move will align the RCL with US Youth Soccer and Region IV, which will conduct their regional and national competitions under the calendar-year model beginning with the 2016-2017 season.
For more information on the transition to calendar-year registration for Regional Clubs, please contact the Director of Coaching for your Club.
Beginning in the 2016-2017 RCL season:

All teams will be based on calendar-year age classifications.

All tryouts will be staggered to midweek start dates so that players finishing State Cup play can do so without conflict.

Players will not be required to purchase new jerseys if there is a duplicate number on the new teams formed.  Clubs will be required to mark the jersey numbers with alternate colors (distinct bright color, either a patch or dye) until the next uniform cycle for the team.

All teams in RCL play will ‘hold’ their current position unless evaluated by the club as requiring a move down for competitive purposes.

Washington Youth Soccer will announce further information on the roll-out of changes from USSF and US Youth Soccer.  Check WashingtonYouthSoccer.org or your Club’s website for additional updates.

Maybe this isn't as bad as it initially sounds.  The 2001 are currently in U15 and each team is comprised of kids born August 1, 2000 to July 31, 2001.  According to the chart on the ussoccer website, in 2016 (which is presumably the 2016-2017 soccer year), U16 will be kids born in 2000 or later.  So, if I am reading this correctly, a U15 team today, which is a mix of 2000 and 2001 birth year kids could remain intact next soccer year and thereafter.  The 2001 birthday kids on the team would in essence play up, as they could also play on a U15 team next year instead.  It also means that kids playing in U16 this soccer year could try out for a U16 team next year as well.

Initially, I thought the kids with 2000 birth years playing in the 01 age group would need to join 00 age group teams, but I don't think that is the case.

It will be interesting to see how the clubs handle this. Some coaches could just keep their teams together and play the 2001 birthday girls up one age group. In Washington we have true tryouts each May. The 2001 birthdays would have to be better than girls dropping off of current 00 teams with 2000 birthdays to make their current A squad for this age group. My DD's team has 10 2000 birthdays and 6 2001. They are all worried about who is dropping down from the next older team already. A team players could suddenly find themselves on B teams in part to having late birthdays. It's going to be a weird year!

Agreed. However, as the girls get older, the age differences matter less and less. I would think that in the older age groups the effect of the change would be less pronounced than in younger age groups.

Regardless, it seems like the best way to implement this would be to phase it in starting with a young pre-select age group. Phasing it in would be much less disruptive.

I am not sure if this change will result in many changes to LH, clubs, or teams.

Assuming that every team has at least 1 player born in 2000 (for our age group), nothing will change in terms of LH byes and team placement (with the usual promotion/relegation/QT and this year's special realignment from 2 divisions back to 3 divisions) since each team will be placed in the age group based on the oldest member of the team.

Within each team, those players born in 2001 have the option of either staying with the team (play up) or find a younger team.  I suspect that the majority will choose to stay with the team unless they were looking to leave anyway (the usual turnover).

Except for the potential risk of unusually high turnover for teams, impact on LH byes, clubs, and teams should be minimal.
