What is a hand ball?

What is a hand ball? Empty What is a hand ball?

Not griping or complaining that one wasn't called, but after watching what seems like hundreds of youth soccer games, I have no idea what a hand ball is. I get not calling the ball to hand situation when a girls arms are by her side and there is no intent. But I've seen on several occasions a girl raise her arms over her head as the ball approaches, the ball hits her arm and no call is made. I wouldn't say she is deliberately trying to catch the ball, but wouldn't this be a clear example of gaining an advantage with a deliberate act (raising arms up)???

This is handling. You'd never be able to figure it out by watching a game around here.

Thanks. Kind of in line with what I thought yet doesn't really address the scenario above. Raising the arms as if signaling a touchdown would not seem to be trying to protect oneself. It would seem this would be a pretty clear foul unless the ref is saying the act is a spastic involuntary action and therefore not deliberate. I don't know. Agree with your comment about not being able to figure it out by watching.

The frustrating thing is that it seems most referees go out of their way not to call a hand ball...especially in the box.  I've seen games where hand balls were called outside the box while the exact same event was let go in the box.  It seems logical to me that you would be even tighter on those inside the box because they directly affect a scoring opportunity.

If you didn't already know the rule, you sure couldn't learn it by watching most games.  A couple of weeks ago I saw a shot deflected by an outstretched forearm about 10 yards in front of the goal...no call.

Was the team in question losing badly when this "no call" occurred?

No...if I remember correctly, the team committing it was up 1-0 at the time.
