Quick Question Empty Quick Question

Post by Kenshi Dave 20/01/15, 03:42 pm

Is there some type of N Tx or UIL rule that prohibits a high school coach from also coaching some of the same girls in Select?

Quick Question Empty Re: Quick Question

Post by Guest 20/01/15, 04:14 pm

Kinda surprised to see you of all people asking that KD.  Figured a long-timer like you would be familiar with it.

It's a UIL rule:

OFF-SEASON PARTICIPATION IN NON-SCHOOL TEAM SPORTS.
(1) School coaches shall not coach 7-12 grade students from their own attendance zone on a non-school team or in a
non-school camp or clinic, with the exception of their own adopted or birth children.
(2) School equipment shall not be used for non-school teams/leagues.
(g) COACHING RESTRICTIONS. For non-school competition school coaches shall not schedule matched games for students in grades 7-12 from their attendance zone. School coaches may assist in organizing, selecting players and coaches, and may supervise school facilities for non-school league play. School coaches shall not coach or instruct 7-12 grade students from their school district attendance zone in the team sports of baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball or volleyball. School coaches shall not supervise facilities for non-school activities on school time. See Section 1201.

Thx ... I knew there was something, but I kept getting it confused with the college/Select coaching rules.

so How does Defeeters get away with having the McKinny Boyd coach as their ECNL coach? That age group definately is High school age or do people for MB just stay away from Defeeters?

She's not the "Head Coach" at Feet first of all.  I don't know if that plays into it or not (don't think it matters).  One player I thought was in direct conflict with that no longer plays HS.  Interesting question though.

The coach can have no involvement. Head coach, assistant coach... No involvement.

Maybe this will draw the nation's attention away from "Deflate-gate".

It only applies to athletes that would be on both teams (i.e. Plays for Feet ON the team Wilson coaches and attends MB HS)

Player in question IS listed on both rosters. The only way there is not a problem, is if the rosters are wrong.

She travels with the team and videos the games and helps haul the gear. She doesn't suit up or participate in anything other than a support role.

I don't pretend to know any specifics of this particular situation, but it is my understanding of the rule that the coach can have no involvement with a club team with kids who attend their attendance zones after 6th grade. This would be for any coach in that particular feeder pattern, high school coaches and middle school coaches too. Whether the kid actually plays on the school team has NO bearing on the situation. If the coach in question is in charge of the club team with a girl from that school then it is a violation.

Apparently not so in this case. It was appealed to UIL to get a waiver for her to play as she was a student prior to the coach coming to the school. It was denied, but her current involvement has been reviewed and allowed by UIL. As you can see on the roster, she has no number assigned.

I personally don't like the rule. To me, it seems as if the rule is based on the assumption that a Coach won't do what is best for the team.

It's a sad case for the kid. She was set and excited to play for her HS when the district let the Girls Soccer Coach go. The new coach is also a Club coach where the kid played. Through no fault of her own, the kid (and family) had to make a choice between club and HS. They chose club. Can't fault them, but it's still sad.

Good for the kid and coach if she still gets to be involved, I'm good either way. The coach would not be able to coach her on the club side though was my point, per the UIL rules. But, you seem to indicate it's all be cleared so no issues with coach or player.
