July 1st --

What happen's if one just does not care about signing July 1st and waits until later in the year to find a team. Good or Bad? We have a few teams that would like my DD to sign but not really in a huge rush.

Kind of depends on how good the team is and how good your DD is.  

If looking at a high end team then there may not be any spots left after 7/1. If looking at a middle to lower end team then there may be options.  

As you can see from the posts there many teams actively looking for players right now, some to upgrade, some just to get enough to make, and others looking to fill out roster to help cash flow.  

If not settled yet and looking at mid to lower level teams and your DD is solid, may not be a bad strategy to see how it all shakes out rather than jumping on a leaky or sinking ship in the last few days before 7/1.

I have found over the last month there are a lot of folks making a lot of promises. I also know once you sign on the dotted line everything favors the Coach and club and those promises mean nothing. The last year was a huge mistake playing for a top team means nothing if the coach sucks and I refuse to get pressured into making the same mistake twice. So I want to take a step back let the dust settle. Not like I cant take the DD to practice's everyone has said she is more than welcome to attend. Also am sure there will be guest playing opportunities. So not sure I see the need to be in a huge rush right now. Oh I guess she may not play LHCGL but not sure that is that big of a deal either. Thoughts?

Several teams will have openings well after July 1, and several teams will have spots come open during the year.

However, most coaches will have a bit of a skeptical eye as to why your DD didn't sign with a team in early July, but...

...bottom line...

If your kid can play and would step in a be an immediate starter/key contributor, they will overlook/justify any possible red flags, and give you the benefit of the doubt...

If your kid would be middle to bottom of the roster, they will be less inclined to offer a spot due to questions as to why you weren't willing to commit to a team in July...

Fair?  Maybe not.  Reality?  From my experience, Yes.

Anyone want to take a guess on who "first post" Poser is? Seems pretty confident in the DD's play.

Doubtful. Your "friend" already has it all figured out and wouldn't be posting on here looking for us to validate his decisions.

I don't know if this person is looking for "validation" - but rather "opportunity"

Let's break it down and rephrase the post:

Hi all, I would like my DD to attend top level practices and guest play in tournaments with multiple teams with out signing contract or paying out any money. I do not want to commit her to a team like last year, due to I can learn all that the Coach has to offer her in a few short weeks or months - then it will be time for us to move to the next team.

Anyone Interested?

Ah the woman that always tries to cause drama. Ask a simple question and get good responses from a couple of folks that obviously know what they are talking about. Then you come along and try to twist it into something evil. I do appreciate the responses from Lefty & Gophers.

You couldn't resist. At least your living up to your name.

But it is a little crazy to think you can just waltz on and off a team whenever you want. Most the high level teams will fill their rosters and there won't be room for guests, barring injuries and family moves. Your kid is obviously working hard and doing well...why not let her enjoy her talent while being part of something cool. It's not just about the coaches and clubs having control but about your daughter and her happiness in the decision. It can't feel good to really work hard for something and not get to do it. .....Just a thought   

July 1, opportunity awaits. Can't wait!

If you're on a team that's participating in LH qualifying tournament and that team holds your players card, do you have to sign a contract in order to play in the tournament?

To be on the roster that is submitted to LH for the QT, the player (guardian) has to sign the "competitive membership form".

There is a deadline in June...sorry I don't know the date. If you haven't signed by then you can be on the team but you can't play in the QT. We actually had a player that joined late in the month of July our first year and she couldn't play.

No player can sign the competitive membership form before July 1st.

Can you smell that? Can you smell it? Thats right - nothing....no one wants to talk. Its like everyone is scared or something and I have to mind my manners - at least for now....     

Guess it's time to go cause trouble on the basket weaving forum - or better yet, SoCal  

Good coaches which are not necessarily only found on top teams at this age will be committed to the DDs that they signed and will focus on developing and working with his committed players. Not still looking/waiting/recruiting on a "ringer" to show up and sign late. Commitment to a team should be a two way street and all of the focus should not be on "anything goes as long as we win". Just something else to chew on during your search.

Is another form of the initial post, "I want to wait and see how all the teams land and try to join the best one?" That is definitely a gamble when you play musical chairs with teams year to year. Let your DD fit in on a team and contribute rather than crash a party and pretend you were there all along.
