From the article...

McCann said an email from a coach said β€œhe was doing well and is expected to be just fine.”

We heard about this Saturday night. It happened at the indoor facility at the Big League Dreams sports complex in Mansfield. Our neighbors were there (their youngest plays in a baseball league). At the time, it was being said the child had a broken neck. Considering Methodist Hospital is less than a mile and half from this facility and they chose to life flight him says to me it had to be something rather severe.

I'm glad the coach is doing well, but I was more concerned about the kid! tongue

Thanks Blank, I did see that. So who pays for an unecessary care flite? The parents? The league? The person who called for it (ref?)?

And thanks Transplant for the background.

Glad to hear that kid and coach are "expected to be just fine". Must have been one helluva scare to think they had to call the chopper.

I would be hesitant to jump your conclusion that air transport was "unnecessary". Just because there was a closer hospital does does not mean it was equipped to handle a possible head/cervical trauma. Staff with the needed expertise may not have been present or, if they were in the hospital, may already have been involved in other cases. Hospitals routinely divert possible severe neuro cases to higher level trauma centers that have staff and facilities better able to handle them when every second counts. In the case of many head injuries, until the player is fully evaluated, it is unknown whether the skills of a highly trained neuro team are going to be needed. In this case, I am glad they weren't, but if it were my child, I would much rather they take the more precautious route and transport to a facility that is prepared to handle the worst while I pray for the best.
