Out of Town Coaching Etiquette Empty Out of Town Coaching Etiquette

Post by jabberjaw 24/01/13, 07:41 pm

What is normal coach routine when going on out of town trip? I guess im trying to see if coach hangs out with team, avoids team, leaves without saying goodbye, or is there a team meeting at the end of the weekend? Lets say your team went to a tournament in Houston over weekend. Most all parents go. Everybody gets their own room. Im interested in any information that some of you have experienced. What is good and what would be bad? Thanks

bad would be coach hanging out in the pool getting extremely drunk with the girls at the hotel.

but to answer your question, what our experience has normally been:

Tournament over weekend, games on Sat/Sun.
Everyone arrives Friday night.
Team meeting that evening around 8:30
kids to bed by 10.

Kids gather at a set time for breakfast, usually in the hotel.
sometimes light warm up before breakfast.

arrive 45min to an hour before game.

eat as a team after the game.

after the last game of the day, eat dinner as a team.
another team meeting 8:30pm (or later if late game)

Sunday same thing as Saturday... warm up, breakfast, game.

Usually, after the last game of the weekend, everyone just leaves to go home.

Coaches will be there for games , meetings and most, but not all meals. Most rarely hang out with parents or players.

Have participated in several out of town tourneys. Coach was "present" most of the time, we had two teams there and we all stayed at the same hotel. He didn't necessarily hang out the entire time or do breakfast and lunch with everyone. He made our girls get out of the pool and go to bed the first Friday night. lol...they weren't too pleased. He also attended a team dinner the 2nd night and played poker with some of the dad's later that evening. Once the games were over on Sunday, he was on his way home.

I have a friend on a Sting team that did something really cool, the Coach and Asst Coach took all the girls to dinner at a nice Italian place while the parents were free to drop & run. They got a private room for the team and spent the evening eating and having fun, but also watched some film of themselves in previous games. They spent time discussing areas they could work on and preparing for their upcoming games. I thought that was pretty awesome...especially since these were U11 girls, yet there were treated as mature, serious players, not children.

We've also been part of the "party" Coach team too...and hey, if you enjoy hanging with him, why not?? It was a blast. Smile
